Why Does Your Sunscreen Pill?
4 Causes & Fixes That Actually Work

Sunscreen pilling is more than just a makeup nightmare it can actually reduce your sun protection. The root cause is almost always product incompatibility or the wrong application technique.

The 4 Main Causes of Sunscreen Pilling

1

Skincare Underneath Isn't Fully Dry

This is the most common culprit. Applying sunscreen immediately over a still-damp serum or moisturiser causes the products to mix on the skin and roll into white flakes.

Fix

Wait 13 minutes after your last skincare step before applying sunscreen. Use a fan to speed up drying if needed.

2

Silicone or Film-Forming Ingredients

Many sunscreens contain silicones (like Dimethicone) or polymer film-formers that create a smooth layer on skin. When layered over another silicone-heavy or oil-based product, they repel each other and peel off instead of absorbing.

Fix

Check your ingredient lists. Switch to a lightweight lotion moisturiser in the morning instead of a heavy gel or silicone-rich formula.

3

Rubbing Too Hard During Application

How you apply sunscreen matters more than you think. Vigorous rubbing or circular motions on the face will physically break down the film-forming layer and cause it to ball up.

Fix

Replace rubbing with gentle outward strokes or use a patting motion to press the sunscreen into skin without disrupting the layers beneath.

4

Build-Up of Dead Skin Cells

Skipping exfoliation lets dead cells accumulate on the surface. These rough patches trap sunscreen instead of letting it absorb, causing it to clump or flake off in sheets.

Fix

Use an AHA/BHA exfoliant or gentle scrub 12 times a week to keep your skin surface smooth and product-ready.

Bonus Tip

When exactly does the pilling happen?

Notice whether pilling happens right after sunscreen or only when you apply foundation on top. If it's the latter, the issue is sunscreen + foundation incompatibility try pressing foundation on with a damp sponge instead of buffing with a brush.
